ANNOUNCING our 2016 Techie Training Stagecraft class!
All Ages 16 – 80
July 20-August 24
Wednesday evenings, 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work backstage? Do you love the theatre, but hate the idea of acting in front of an audience? Would you like to help on your kid’s musical—or work on a tech crew—but don’t know what you can do? You need some Techie Training!
A huge amount of work and creativity goes on behind the scenes for any play or musical, and lots of talented and creative people call themselves “techies!” If you would like to try your hand at backstage work, but don’t know how to get started, now is your chance. Lifelong techie and professional theatre technician Nathan Bell is offering this 6-week class in the basics of all things tech. Topics to be covered will include: stagecraft terminology and history, basics of drafting and design, scenic carpentry and construction, lighting tech and lighting design, sound, music, and sound effects design, rigging and counterweight systems, special effects, and much, much more. Gain practical hands-on knowledge in a fun, welcoming environment. Get a look into the work, collaboration, and nuts-and-bolts that go into making a play happen, and learn the true meaning of that old techie saying, “When you do your job right, nobody even knows you’re there.”
Nathan Bell has over 15 years of experience in the technical theatre world, and started his career at the tender young age of 16 doing lighting and other tech right here at Little Lake Theatre. While pursuing his undergraduate degree at Depaul University, Nate worked at several professional theatres throughout Chicago, including the Goodman Theatre. For the past 10+ years, he has been back in his beloved home town of Pittsburgh, and has worked with many local companies and universities. He is currently working as a scenic technician, carpenter, and rigger at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Drama.
